Interleaving: Why Mixing Topics Beats Studying in Blocks

Studying one topic to exhaustion before moving on feels efficient but harms long-term learning. Interleaving mixes topics — and works better.


Interleaving is the practice of mixing different topics or problem types within a single study session, instead of studying one topic exhaustively before moving to the next. If you have three topics to revise, blocking means studying topic A fully, then B, then C. Interleaving means rotating between them — a bit of A, then B, then C, then back to A — within the same sitting.

Blocked study feels more effective, and that feeling is exactly why students default to it. When you do twenty pharmacology problems in a row, your performance improves visibly across the set, and the smooth progress feels like learning. But much of that improvement is short-term momentum that fades. Interleaving feels harder and more error-prone in the moment, yet produces stronger retention and transfer when tested later.

The reason interleaving works comes down to discrimination. When topics are mixed, you cannot coast on the assumption that every problem uses the method you just practised. You have to first identify what kind of problem you are facing and then select the right approach — which is precisely the skill an exam demands, where questions arrive in no particular order. Blocked practice lets you skip that identification step, so it never gets trained.

This effect is clearest in subjects with multiple solvable problem types: maths, physics, statistics, pharmacology calculations, and any exam that mixes formats. A classic study had students learn to calculate the volumes of different solids; the interleaved group performed worse during practice but roughly doubled the blocked group's accuracy on a later test. The pattern repeats across domains.

To apply interleaving without chaos, group related-but-distinct material and rotate through it. Revise three connected topics in one session rather than dedicating whole days to single topics. When practising questions, shuffle topics rather than filtering to one. Tolerate the extra friction — the sense that it is harder is a sign the desirable difficulty is doing its job, not that the method is failing.
